Landscaping rocks are incredibly versatile. They can be used to create water-efficient xeriscaping, gravel patios, and garden paths or walkways. Landscaping rocks can lend texture to your yard while being virtually maintenance-free. Here are the steps you’ll need to take to build a garden path using landscaping rocks.
5 Steps to a Rock Garden Path
STEP 1: Put down about two inches of sand and then level the ground using a plate compactor, which can be rented from most any local equipment rental company or home improvement store for about $90 a day, plus deposit. Tip: Rent a smaller compactor that allows compaction in hard to reach spaces.
STEP 2: To prevent weed growth, installing a barrier is essential. Biodegradable paper mulch is an environmentally friendly option for eliminating weeds, reducing erosion, and controlling soil temperatures. Roll the paper across the dimensions of your walkway and trim as needed.
STEP 3: Lay the flagstone down about six inches apart. You can also use pavers. Both stone and pavers provide a non-slip surface, making them perfect if you’re creating a path from the pool to your back porch. You’ll want to ensure that all stones are level.
STEP 4: Surround the flagstone with landscaping rocks in a complementary color. Gravel that is ¾ inches or smaller is ideal for walking on. Smaller river rocks and pebbles that are no larger than ½ inches is another excellent option. Spread evenly across the size of your walkway for a clean look.
STEP 5: Hire Cutting Edge Curbing to install professional-grade concrete curbing to hold landscaping rocks. Curbing creates visual appeal and reduces trimming time. Design flexibility allows flowing curves, straight lines, and custom plans. For a more natural, rustic look, consider incorporating surface select boulders.
