Revive Your Lawn by Overseeding

Revive Your Lawn by Overseeding

by cuttingadmin, September 1, 2020

Labor Day’s approach, schools welcoming students back – whether in-person or virtually – and the reappearance of seasonal favorites make us wish for fall’s return.

Luckily, you won’t have to wait long, as the first day of fall is September 22.

Fall will bring cooler weather, shorter days, and beautiful scenery to the valley. It is also the absolute best time of year to overseed your lawns for thick green grass.

What is Overseeding?

Overseeding is the practice of spreading winter rye, which is just one of many landscape materials offered by Cutting Edge Curbing Sand & Rock, over existing turf to revive your lawn.

It is an incredibly easy and cost-effective way to repair bare or brown spots – commonly caused by either the Arizona sun or your pet – and enhance your grass’s color.

It is also an excellent method for giving your lawn the appearance of golf course greens in the spring – you should see results in about April.

When, Exactly, Should You Overseed?

According to the University of Arizona, the best time to seed over bare spots is in October, preferably when temperatures are low 80s.

After the North American Monsoon has ended, there’s no need to worry about strong winds blowing the seed away, and valley temperatures are much cooler. These conditions are ideal for seed germination.

Watering will help promote seed germination, but be careful to avoid overwatering, as this can cause a run-off of both water and seed – the recommended frequency is three to four times, max, during the first week.

Residents can also finish other outdoor projects using landscape materials, such as curbing and mulch.

Professionally installed landscape curbing prevents grass seed from getting into other areas of your lawn, provides a nice contrast to your garden and tree beds, and can improve curb appeal.

Organic mulch also enhances curb appeal, but more importantly, it helps the soil retain moisture and provides it with nutrients when it breaks down.
